A graph a day… March 23, 2024

How does Covid-19 compare to flu? @1goodtern has just published an interesting graphical comparison:

Before the Covid-19 pandemic,2018 was the worst year for influenza disease in a long time. In the US, the hospitalisation reached an estimated number of 700,000 cases, more than 590, 000 in 2014/15. Similarly, in the UK, a combination of two waves and less effective vaccination caused a large outbreak, particularly among older people.

However, this was dwarfed by COVID-19 hospitalisations, even in the “post-pandemic” year of 2023. Interestingly, the 2023 influenza outbreak was also large, possibly caused by immunity weakened by prior COVID-19 infections.
